'Musical Fragility: a phenomenological examination'
Below are non-requested additional materials which exhibit substantial projects within my career.
In 2010, I founded a•pe•ri•od•ic, a performance collective devoted to notated, acoustic, experimental music. I program, commission perform, and direct the ensemble of 8 performers. Over the past seven years, we have commissioned, premiered, and recorded works by Michael Pisaro, Jürg Frey, Ryoko Akama, Sarah Hughes, Kunsu Shim/Gerhard Staebler, Eliza Brown, and Laura Steenberge. Drawn to works of sparseness, contemplation, and quietude, a•pe•ri•od•ic has a history of interpreting distinctive pieces using a collaborative rehearsal process, deriving meaning and intention from oblique prose scores with great sensitivity.
During the 2016-2017 season, we were artists in residence at High Concept Labs where we spent 6 months rehearsing Tim Parkinson's opera 'Time With People.' Devoid of singers, characters and narrative, this 'trash' opera harkens back to 16th century opera, and captures the absurdity of everyday activities, interactions, objects, and life. In February 2017 we gave the US premiere at Constellation (Chicago), and have continued to tour with it around midwest universities and art museums (Arts Club of Chicago, Oberlin College, University of Iowa, Beloit College).
Below you will find a video of our premiere performance.
Over the past five years, I have organized 3 large-scale new music fesivals.
• 2012 The Chicago John Cage Centennial Festival
• 2014 The Chicago Wandelweiser Festival
(co-organized with Peter Margasak)
• 2017 Power in Sound: The Music of Galina Ustvolskaya
(co-organized with Shanna Gutierrez)
